New Orleans is a culture of generations in-the-making. A Gumbo of influences from French, Spanish, African, Italian, Caribbean and more - blending them all together in one big pot. New Orleans is more than a City. A sense of New Orleans can be found in the heart and soul and cannot be swept away by hurricane, flood or the evacuation of residents to safety. New Orleans goes with them - just as a little bit of New Orleans goes with each and every visitor who has set foot along the curve of the mighty Mississippi.
As Chefs, Maitre D, Wait Staff and Food Line Workers fled the City for safety in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, you can bet that those who graced the more than 3,400 eating establishments and served up a memorable meal are clamoring to come home. In the meantime, New Orleans Keeps on Cooking' as notable Crescent City Chefs hit the road to raise funds to offset the losses of their restaurants and head back home to rebuild this cultural and culinary landmark.
For many of these talented Chefs, they have lost a dream of a lifetime; the position they have prepared for many years is gone. Many have put everything at stake to have their own restaurant. They have a displaced staff, destroyed buildings and a note to pay on what no longer remains. For the lucky few, the structure is still standing. The bread and butter that sustains their business and the families of their employees is at stake.
That is why Food & Vine Time Productions has partnered with Chef Michael Flores of Mis En Place to 'Keep New Orleans Cooking' and raise funds for the Chefs/Restaurateurs to ride out the extended storm until life and tourists return to New Orleans. The participating Chefs split the proceeds of the multi-city tour and can Keep New Orleans Cookin' throughout the United States until they return safely home.
